A New Chapter

Eventuallly, after exhausting all arguments including the one that I would need accommodation for any other members of the family who would want to visit my wife’s grave a compromise was reached with me having two rooms as single accommodation in Pergamos village, one to use as a bedroom and the other as a living room. Sleeping accommodation would be provided for Nick when he came on leave. I nicknamed this place ‘The Grot’. Although this was not ideal I was able to take my fridge/freezer and cooking equipment with me from the bungalow and I was close enough to the Pergy club to be able to walk there. The one thing I did miss was not having a telephone on tap though I was able to use the phone at the Pergy club if necessary.

One thing I have forgotten to mention so far is that when we moved to the bungalow we inherited a cat called Pepper. She went with me to ‘The Grot’ and settled down quite nicely until one day I went to work as usual and during the morning there was a violent thunderstorm and when I got home Pepper was nowhere to be seen. I hunted round for her and eventually found her. Unfortunately she was dead and I can only surmise that she had died of fright during the storm as it was a particularly violent one with lots of thunder and lightning.

As I earlier stated, after Sheila went back to the UK we decided to keep in touch and in March 1981 we both thought that we would like to meet again, consequently Sheila came out to Cyprus in April staying with Geoff and Nancy. When she came to Cyprus Sheila told me that Dennis and her were going to get divorced and I decided that I would ask her to marry me. At this stage I would like to state that while Margaret was terminally ill she said that she hoped that I would find someone else to share my life with. At that time I was quite sure that I wouldn’t meet and didn’t want to meet anyone else. I’m quite sure in my own mind that if I hadn’t met Sheila I would have stayed single and quite possibly drunk myself to death before now as I’m afraid I was drinking rather heavily at the time. Sheila agreed to marry me after her divorce was finalised.
