Loughborough

We stayed at Malta for 3 days and were able to travel around the island. One of the places of interest we visited was the Blue lagoon which is a notable beauty spot. There was a café  there where we had a drink and to amuse ourselves we started getting musical notes from our wine glasses by running our fingers around the rims of the glasses. It was the first time the locals had seen this done and by the time we left they were all at it, getting tunes out of their glasses.

Blue Lagoon, Malta (recent picture)

From Malta we sailed for Famagusta and when we got there found that the department had booked us into the Palace Hotel in the centre of the town. That evening I went to the Anchorage club, a beach club which had been started by my colleagues since I had left Cyprus in 1958. There I met up with a number of old friends. The following day I reported to the admin at 9th Signal Regiment at Ayios Nikolaos and was told which watch I was to join and when to start duty.

From then it was a case of going round the estate agents and finding suitable accommodation to bring the family out to.

After a short while I found a bungalow, number 10 Spetson Street which had to be cleared by the department both on cost and security. This they eventually did and I was able to send for the family to join me.

Another important item had also to be attended to and that was the return to the family of Kerry, who had been left with the Rawcliffes. Now the Rawcliffes had finished their tour of duty in Cyprus before we were due out and had left Kerry with another colleague of mine called Sinclair. When I went to the Sinclairs to see about Kerry being returned to us they were very reluctant to give her up as they had grown very attached to her. I eventually convinced them that Kerry belonged to us but as a compromise agreed that they could keep her until they had finished their tour as this was only about six weeks away.
